Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University

The Endocrine services in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (previously known as IPGMR) Hospital started as thyroid clinic under the guidance of Prof. M N Alam hosted by Institute of Nuclear Medicine and patronized by the Department of Medicine in 1992. The founder chairman Professor Md. Fariduddin join as a medical officer and in-charge of thyroid clinic in 1995. In the year 2004, the Discipline of Endocrine Medicine headed by Professor of Endocrinology (Prof. Naseem Akhter Chowdhury) started as a separate unit under the Department of Medicine. In 2006 MD (EM) course of BSMMU was also started. Residency of same course started in 2010. Three student of this same department got the prime minister gold medal awards. Highest records for this university.

From 22nd August, 2012 Endocrinology emerged as separate Department of BSMMU, under the chairmanship of Professor Md. Fariduddin. At present it provides services for the diagnosis and management of hormonal and metabolic disorders like diabetes, diseases of thyroid, parathyroid, pituitary and adrenal glands, male & female reproductive disorders, as well as obesity, metabolic disorders and PCOS. Other than education, research, patient service, health camps, awareness, man power development are well reported activates of this department.

This is the only integrated Endocrine referral center in Bangladesh.

Message from Founder Chairman

Welcome to the Department of Endocrinology at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). Endocrine diseases including diabetes, thyroid, obesity, PCOS, infertility and osteoporosis are becoming increasingly prevalent in our population. Treatments for these and other conditions are changing rapidly, and exciting advances in basic research offer a promise of even more effective therapies to come.

As a research-intensive Department in the Faculty of Medicine, our faculty and staff provide state-of-the-art clinical care for patients with diabetes and endocrine disorders, and generate new knowledge with the ultimate goal of improving our understanding and treatment of these diseases. The research is fostered by our department is one of the top among all Endocrinology department of Bangladesh.
